Mangayamma Yaramati, a 73-year-old woman in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has given birth to twin girls this Thursday following an IVF treatment.
Dr. Uma Sankar, the woman’s doctor, told BBC Telugu, “The mother and the babies are doing well”.
Ms. Yaramati and her 82-year-old husband had always wanted children but were unable to conceive until now.
“We are incredibly happy,” her jubilant husband Sitarama Rajarao spoke to BBC Telugu on Thursday, hours after the babies were born.
Unfortunately just a day later, he suffered a sudden stroke and is currently being treated in the hospital.
Earlier, when asked who would care for the children in case anything were to happen to the couple due to their advanced age, Mr. Rajarao had said, “Nothing is in our hands. Whatever should happen will happen. It is all in the hands of God”.
It was important for the couple to have children as they said that they felt stigmatized in their village.
Ms. Yaramati shared, “They would call me a childless lady. We tried many times and saw numerous doctors, so this is the happiest time of my life.”
The twin girls were delivered by Caesarean section, which is common in such rare cases. In 2016, another Indian woman in her 70s, Daljinder Kaur had given birth to a boy.
