Stephen Hawking: Greed and stupidity will lead to the end of the human race

The question is not too far fetched if you think about it. Renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking believed it will.
The black hole expert who died in March 2018 has warned us during multiple instances that this planet, along with us, is doomed to die unless we do something about it. At the time of his death, he remained convinced that our race would require a “Planet B” to survive.

He believed either climate change or nuclear war would one day wipe us all from the face of the Earth.

During an interview with BBC News, he said “We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible. Trump’s action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of two hundred and fifty degrees, and raining sulphuric acid. Climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it’s one we can prevent if we act now.”
His response came during the time when President Trump decided to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. Hawkings feared that we have crossed the point of no return. We are consuming resources faster than ever, and none of it is easily replenishable.

He noted during a Larry King Now interview that “We certainly have not become less greedy or less stupid,”. As the population keeps rapidly increasing pollution levels are also on the rise. Our efforts to contain global warming was never enough. Even today we fail to do what we can.

Is there a way for us to escape our fate? To that question like many others, Hawking points to the sky. In his words, “The best hope for the survival of the human race might be independent colonies in space.”

Are we slowly marching to the inevitable death that Stephen Hawking predicts? Or will we find a way out? Only time will tell us. Till then we keep hoping and working in the present. Because at the end of the day action matters.
